Gamers, you might want to sit down for this. It looks like we are in for another round of wallet-wringing price hikes, and this time, the focus is on PlayStation game prices. Just when we were getting used to the idea of $80 price tags and costly hardware, Sony has turned the dial-up even further in countries like Brazil and Turkey, leaving many players feeling blindsided.

It’s a tough pill to swallow. The gaming community is already navigating a landscape of expensive new releases, but these recent increases feel like a direct hit on some of the most passionate fan bases. Let’s break down what is happening.

Brazil’s Double Whammy: PS Plus and Digital Games

First, let’s head over to Brazil. After being hit with an increase in the annual PlayStation Plus subscription fee, gamers there are now seeing PlayStation game prices on digital titles soar. According to Brazilian gaming site GameVicio, the changes are stark.

The newly released Astro Bot, for instance, saw its price increase from R 299.90 to R 339.90. Meanwhile, the upcoming Silent Hill f game experienced a price jump from R 349.90 to R 399.90. To put this into perspective, R 399.90 is roughly $72.96 USD. With the country’s currency already struggling, gamers are feeling the pressure more than ever.

Turkey’s Gaming Crisis: Unaffordable PlayStation Game Prices

The situation is just as dire, if not worse, in Turkey. One Turkish gamer described the situation as “very bad,” explaining how difficult it has become to afford new games.

A look at the store confirms this. The digital version of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut is currently listed for 2,199 TL. For a person earning a monthly salary of 7,830 Turkish lira, that single game costs about 28% of their income. It’s a massive financial sacrifice just to enjoy a hobby.

This hike in game prices came right after Sony inflated the PlayStation Plus subscription costs in the region by a massive 55%:

  • Extra Subscription: Increased from 2,340 TL to 3,645 TL.
  • Deluxe Subscription: Increased from 2,740 TL to 4,266 TL.

What is Going On, Sony?

The core of the issue is the massive spike in PlayStation game prices without a detailed public explanation from Sony, though the company has previously attributed such regional price adjustments to fluctuating currency exchange rates and local market conditions. Why are these specific countries being hit with such drastic increases? It feels like the patience and financial limits of gamers are being tested. With economic conditions varying so wildly from one country to another, the community is left seeking a solution or, at the very least, a convincing reason for these changes.
