It’s a rough day for Altered across Enoch. We’re getting official confirmation that Outriders 2, the sequel to the gritty sci-fi looter-shooter, was one of two major projects recently canceled by developer People Can Fly. The news comes as the company navigates a period of significant restructuring, which has unfortunately included multiple rounds of layoffs. For fans who battled their way across a hostile alien world in the original, the hope for a follow-up has been officially grounded.
The canceled Outriders 2, which was being developed under the codename “Project Gemini,” was reportedly well into its development cycle. Sources indicate the project had even progressed to the motion capture stage earlier this year, making its cancellation a particularly tough pill to swallow.
What Led to the Outriders 2 Cancellation?
While People Can Fly has not released an official statement detailing the exact cause, inside sources point towards a combination of funding problems and a strained relationship with the game’s publisher, Square Enix. These behind-the-scenes struggles appear to have sealed the fate of Outriders 2, preventing the team from continuing its work on the anticipated sequel.
This cancellation is part of a larger, more painful move for the studio. The shutdown of Project Gemini and another title, the self-published VR game Project Bifrost, resulted in an unspecified number of layoffs in June 2025. This follows a previous round of layoffs last year. This follows a previous round of layoffs in December 2024, which saw over 120 employees depart, signaling a major strategic shift for the Polish developer.
The Future for People Can Fly After Outriders 2
Despite the grim news surrounding Outriders 2, the lights are still on at People Can Fly. The studio is pressing forward with an impressive slate of five other projects currently in the works. This diverse lineup shows the developer isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket.
The current projects include:
- Gears of War: E-Day, in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios.
- Project Echo, a title being developed with publisher Krafton.
- Project Delta, in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment.
- Lost Rift, a new VR title.
- Project Bison, another major in-house game.
While the loss of Outriders 2 is a blow, People Can Fly remains a busy studio with major partnerships. We’ll be watching closely to see what comes next.
