Santa Monica Studio’s rumored Greek-Era God of War project set in ancient Greece has reportedly been delayed to 2026, according to well-known industry insider Jeff Grubb, though Sony has not officially confirmed this. Originally expected to drop sometime this year, the unannounced title was noticeably absent from Sony’s recent State of Play, fueling speculation about its development status.
In the latest episode of The Last of the Nintendogs podcast on June 17, Grubb shared that the mysterious new God of War game — described as a 2.5D Metroidvania — is still in the works but has been quietly pushed back. “I have Marathon and the unannounced new God of War Greek project, which I heard was pushed into 2026 as well,” Grubb stated.
A Return to the Greek-Era God of War
The game, which has yet to be officially announced by PlayStation, is rumored to feature Deimos, Kratos’ long-lost brother, though it’s unclear if he is the protagonist or a supporting character due to conflicting reports. The setting is said to take place during the earlier days of Kratos’ saga, before he ascended to godhood by defeating Ares. For fans of the original trilogy, this prequel could offer a deeper look into Kratos’ past and the mythology of ancient Greece that many missed after the series moved into Norse territory.
While details remain unconfirmed, insiders like Jeff Grubb and Tom Henderson suggest the title leans into a 2.5D Metroidvania-style gameplay structure, a major shift from the cinematic action the series is known for, though this awaits Sony’s confirmation. The 2.5D format would mark a bold new direction, possibly aimed at diversifying the God of War franchise without directly competing with the mainline titles.
Delay Explained: Development Still Underway
The reason for the delay is unclear but may be tied to the project’s scope or development timeline. Jeff Grubb previously indicated a 2025 internal schedule, but the shift to 2026 suggests Santa Monica Studio may need more time to refine the experience. The studio may have also expanded the project’s scale, prompting the push to 2026.
Despite the setback, fans may see an official announcement in 2025 or 2026, depending on Sony’s reveal plans. However, if PlayStation decides to wait until the game is closer to release, we may not see anything concrete until late 2025 or early 2026.
